You can sense the strong embrace of God’s grace and steadfast guidance supporting the patriots at Brave Books. They are committed to saving our nation’s children from the twisted “woke” ideology that has infiltrated American culture. CEO Trent Talbot, a father of two, couldn’t stand idly by while teachers and celebrities indoctrinated his kids to hate America and the values it represents. This led to the birth of Brave Books. You might be asking, “What is Brave Books, and how does it work to protect our children?” It’s a publishing house focused on creating anti-woke, wholesome Christian content for children, aiming to counter the ideological indoctrination and grooming that the left has directed at our youth. Their efforts are gaining traction. The fine folks at Brave won’t stop fighting to save our nation’s kids.

Actually, Brave Books is likely a name you’ve come across without even realizing it. Actor and conservative activist Kirk Cameron has recently garnered attention for organizing family-friendly “story hours” at local public libraries. Teaming up with Brave Books, Kirk provides an alternative to events like “Drag Queen Story Hour,” which have sparked controversy for featuring men dressed in women’s clothes performing for children. The partnership with Brave Books aims to offer parents and educators a safe, values-aligned option.

You can imagine how excited Revolver was to get an opportunity to sit down with Brave Books’ CEO, Trent Talbot. Our conversation took a deep dive into Trent’s mission to protect American children and rekindle their love for country and Christ. We also explored the various strategies Trent employs to combat the pervasive “woke” ideology that’s currently plaguing our nation.

Revolver: Thanks so much for doing this interview with us, Trent. Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us a bit about you and how Brave Books came to be. What is the origin story of Brave Books?

Trent: I was a happily practicing ophthalmologist who had just gotten married and had my first child in the summer of 2020. Within the first few weeks of my daughter’s birth, I noticed the child indoctrination table at Barnes and Noble with all sorts of pro-LGBTQ, pro-abortion, and pro-CRT books. A few days later, my best friend’s seven-year-old daughter was gifted the latest Nancy Drew book, which had a trans character in it. Within the following week, the trailer for the Netflix film Cuties went viral, which sexualized young girls, and Antiracist Baby became the number one book on all of Amazon.

These incidents made it clear that there was a real war going on for the hearts, minds, and souls of our children. As a new father, I couldn’t get that out of my head and would stay up at night thinking about what could be done to counteract all of this nonsense.

The plan I came up with was to create a brand that Christian and traditional-minded parents could trust with their children’s imaginations. I knew that it started with, first and foremost, incredible stories and a fun universe, so we created our universe called Freedom Island and a super fun cast of characters with Team BRAVE and villains like Culture the Vulture and Black Heart.

Revolver: You guys have been at the forefront of one of the most important cultural battles in decades—the fight against the absurd and abominable Drag Queen Story Hour movement. In your efforts to supply a healthy and wholesome alternative, you have made some powerful enemies, including the American Library Association. We have covered your battle against the ALA at Revolver. Can you say a little bit more about this situation and how it has developed in the meantime?

Trent: It started when the ALA tried to sabotage our See You at the Library day on August 5th by instructing librarians to book all of their rooms and prevent local parents from hosting BRAVE Books Story Hours. Once that was exposed, the ALA has been feeling the heat from state politicians, and eight states have cut off funding and ties with the ALA, with many more in the process.

It didn’t help their cause when Emily Drabinski, the President of the ALA, came out and stated, “Libraries need to be a site of socialist organizing.” In response to her statement, we got together with Jack Posobiec, who wrote one of our books about anti-socialism called The Island of Free Ice Cream. He and Kirk Cameron spread the word about Drabinski’s viewpoints. Then I took it one step further and hosted a story hour in my local public library to provide the community with knowledge of the harms of socialism. It was a huge hit, with over 100 people in attendance. And the LGBTQ group that tried to counter it by giving away free ice cream—well, let’s just say they had a LOT of leftover ice cream.

Revolver: Tell us about some of your latest and most popular titles at Brave Books.

Trent: Our first book, Elephants Are Not Birds, is already an iconic book. I have people come up to me all the time and tell me how much they love it. Some of our other most popular books are The Island of Free Ice Cream by Jack Posobiec, Pride Comes Before the Fall by Kirk Cameron, and The Test of Lionhood by Kevin Sorbo on the topic of masculinity.

We keep very busy since we send out a new book every month as a part of our Freedom Island Book Club, which keeps readers engaged and fosters a lifelong love for reading. Our latest book is Kirk Cameron’s third book that teaches the topic of loving your enemies, called The Fox, the Fair, and the Invention Scare.

Revolver: You’ve already done so much, but something tells us you folks are only getting started. What does the future look like for Brave? Tell us, if you would, about some of your new projects.

Trent: We currently only offer picture books that reach the 4–10 age range. To be THE brand that Christian and traditional-minded parents trust with their children’s imaginations, we must go beyond picture books to reach older audiences and take our incredible storytelling to the screen.

We are well underway on a middle-grade chapter book series, and based on early drafts, it will be incredibly special.

I’m sworn to secrecy on our first television project, but I can say that we are shooting for our first TV show to be released in 2024.

We pray these ventures are more than just world-class entertainment, but content that builds children’s character and strengthens the family unit by bringing families together.
