A new poll by YouGov reveals overwhelming  public support for President Trump’s stated commitment to withdraw troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. A supermajority, 74 percent, of Americans support withdrawing troops from Iraq, and an even more impressive 76 percent support withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

In the poll, which surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults, 44 percent said they strongly support bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq and 30 percent said they somewhat support doing so.

For Afghanistan, 46 percent said they strongly support bringing troops home and 30 percent said they somewhat support it. [The Hill]

This new evidence of overwhelming bi-partisan support for troop withdrawal comes at an especially timely moment, as swamp servants in Congress are doing everything they can to thwart the President’s efforts to withdraw troops from the Middle-East.

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers who want to stop President Donald Trump from pulling U.S. troops from military conflicts and overseas bases are using a once-unusual tactic that has in the last three years become Congress’ go-to tool.

Lawmakers from the Senate and the House have in the last three years sought to use legislation to prevent the president from pulling troops from Afghanistan, Syria, South Korea, and now Germany — unless the administration certifies that a withdrawal will not harm U.S. or allied interests. Indeed it is quite remarkable to compare the congressional Republican efforts to sabotage troop withdrawal in relation to overwhelming public support for the President’s intended withdrawals.

Among many mainstream Republicans in Congress, Trump’s myriad withdrawal efforts are deeply unpopular. The House version of the annual defense policy bill, scheduled for a vote next week, would ban the administration from lowering troop levels in Germany below their current benchmark of 24,500 until the Pentagon presents a plan to Congress and certifies that the cuts won’t harm U.S. interests…In the Senate, Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla joined with prominent Democrats to offer a similar amendment to the Senate version of the bill limiting troop cuts in Germany. This poll of the general American public follows up on another poll surveying American veterans and military families.

Nearly three-quarters of veterans surveyed and almost 70 percent of troops’ family members support a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, according to a new poll from a conservative activist group released Wednesday.

“I think this shows the fatigue of almost two decades of war,” said Nate Anderson, executive director of the group. “And I think there is increased awareness among the American public about how long we have been fighting.”

The nationwide survey, conducted April 7 to 10, includes responses from about 700 military veterans and about 800 military family members. All were chosen randomly. [Military Times]

Let’s hope that polls such as these reinforce the sound foreign policy instincts and promised troop withdrawals that helped to catapult President Trump into office. The American people have had enough of foreign wars which only enrich oligarchs as America’s roads and bridges crumble, and its people suffer economic devastation.
