Another highway close call; this time it was caught on camera. A US truck driver spots a semi coming down the wrong lane on a freeway, and he confronts the driver, who, yes, as you guessed, was a foreigner who could barely speak English.
The exchange is tense and raw, but it captures a growing and very dangerous problem in America’s trucking world: unqualified foreign drivers getting behind the wheel of 40-ton rigs that share the road with everyone else.
The situation has become dangerous enough that the White House had to step in. After a series of deadly wrecks involving commercial drivers who failed basic licensing and language-comprehension tests, the Department of Transportation issued an emergency rule tightening who can hold a U.S. commercial driver’s license.
The order, backed by Team Trump, limits CDLs to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents until states prove they’re following federal standards. Audits found some DMVs waving unqualified applicants through the system—drivers who couldn’t read road signs or communicate with law enforcement. The result was chaos on the highways and multiple fatal crashes that should never have happened.
Thankfully, this incident in Indiana didn’t end in yet another deadly crash. The US trucker stepped in to save the day, but God only knows what other mistakes this foreign driver and others like him are still making all over the roads.
Team Trump knows this is a major problem, and after a slew of deadly wrecks involving foreign and illegal commercial drivers who failed basic licensing and language-comprehension tests, the Department of Transportation issued an emergency rule tightening up who can hold a US commercial driver’s license.
This will limit CDLs to US citizens and lawful permanent residents until states prove they’re following federal standards. What’s really scary is that audits at some DMVs found them pushing unqualified applicants through the system. We’re talking about drivers who couldn’t read road signs or even communicate with law enforcement. The result is, of course, massive chaos on the highways and a lot of fatal crashes that should never have happened.

Meanwhile, the crackdown from Team Trump is starting to show signs that it’s working. US truckers are seeing their wages rise as illegals are taken off the road.
One trucker posted on X about a run from Chicago to Fargo: “[I] Normally do Chicago to Fargo for $1200. Had a [delivery] broker call and offer me $1800. Needless to say, I took him up on the offer. Lord do I hope this hangs around a little bit.”
Craig Fuller, who runs FreightWaves, pointed out the shift: “Volumes are anemic, but spot rates rose [2 percent] anyways. What gives? We are seeing the bottom feeders get squeezed out of the market, since these firms don’t operate in the contract market.”
These gains follow a series of busts that reveal just how deep the problem ran. In Oklahoma alone, a three-day sweep along I-40 netted over 90 illegal drivers in semis, with reports putting the number as high as 120 or even 130 in related stings. Agents confiscated licenses from those lacking proper entry papers, like the I-94 form proving legal arrival. One case involved a migrant with a New York CDL listing “NO NAME GIVEN” as the holder—issued after the Biden crew let him loose in the country back in 2021. Similar raids hit Serbian drivers in multiple states, with about 15 collared in early October for faking their way into the industry.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy laid it out plain on Fox News: “We have Americans who have been in the trucking industry for 50 years through family businesses. They can’t do business anymore because you have these illegals coming in, living out of their trucks. You have teams of drivers, they’re not safe, they can’t speak the language, and they come in under price … way underprice.”
Bill Skinner, a trucking expert, warned on X: “Almost 1/3 of our nation’s freight is hauled by non-citizen drivers. That’s not just a safety issue — it’s a national security risk.”
America’s roads are supposed to be the one place families can travel without fear. They shouldn’t have to worry about a semi coming the wrong way because someone behind the wheel is here illegally and never should’ve been licensed in the first place. For way too long now, trucking companies have pushed for looser rules to keep their labor costs low, and our politicians have looked the other way.
The result has been deadly.

That era needs to end. Team Trump’s new enforcement push is a start, but as this video shows, there’s still a long way to go before every driver on our highways meets the standards that keep people alive by keeping non-English-speaking foreigners off of our roads.
