The Trump administration just dropped another massive hammer on Brazil’s radical censorship regime, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

In a major escalation, Senator Marco Rubio took to X to announce that the US government is officially sanctioning Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. De Moraes is the crooked judge at the center of Brazil’s political war on populism. He’s been targeting “Tropical Trump” Jair Bolsonaro and his allies with the same playbook that America’s corrupt and weaponized judicial system used against President Trump and his J6 supporters. It’s left-wing lawfare—copy-paste, rinse, repeat.

But this isn’t the first blow. President Trump has been laying the groundwork for months, building an apparatus to take on Brazil’s North Korea-style regime.

We previously covered Rubio and Beattie’s early move to challenge Brazil’s tyrannical censorship machine.

Revolver:

At this point, Brazil doesn’t even resemble a free country. It’s morphing into North Korea 2.0, with a full-blown censorship regime, political lawfare, and one lunatic judge running the whole operation like a Stalinist larper.

That judge is Alexandre de Moraes, the Brazilian Supreme Court justice who has single-handedly turned the judiciary into a weapon against any type of populist opposition. This guy banned President Jair Bolsonaro from running again, censored speech on social media, and is actively persecuting dissidents. Sound familiar?

Well, it should because it’s the same exact playbook that was used (and is still being employed) on President Trump and his supporters.

But here’s where the script flips: President Trump and his team just took major action. And it’s not just symbolic stuff; this is real punishment with teeth. Sharp teeth. Thanks to the work of Revolver’s Darren Beattie and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US government just took real action against Brazil’s censorship regime, and it’s hitting them where it hurts.

Marco Rubio:

.@POTUS made clear that his administration will hold accountable foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States. Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’s political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans.

I have therefore ordered visa revocations for Moraes and his allies on the court, as well as their immediate family members effective immediately.

But this latest move takes it even further… Trump is clearly going to bat for Bolsonaro and standing up for the freedom of all Brazilians.

Here’s the scoop from Rubio:

.@POTUS and @USTreasury have sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for serious human rights abuses. Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you.

This is exactly what Trump promised: to hold the international lawfare machine accountable. And he’s delivering.

Zerohedge:

In a huge move which the Brazilian government has blasted as rank political interference in its internal affairs, the Trump administration on Wednesday pulled the trigger on previously threatened sweeping tariffs on Brazil, and in addition sanctioned the judge overseeing the trial of Jair Bolsonaro, who has been accused of plotting a coup—and remains currently on trial—after rejecting the election results which brought President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to power.

“Today, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is sanctioning Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes (de Moraes), who has used his position to authorize arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppress freedom of expression,” the US Treasury statement reads.

“De Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politicized prosecutions—including against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Today’s action makes clear that Treasury will continue to hold accountable those who threaten U.S. interests and the freedoms of our citizens.”

This is another huge shift. The Treasury is now openly admitting what populists have said for years: Bolsonaro is the target of a political witch hunt. Trump has said this exact sentiment many times, and now his administration is acting on it.

Bolsonaro recently returned from political exile in Florida and was quickly slapped with an ankle monitor and thrown into a sham trial back home. The charges are as flimsy as you’d imagine: rejecting a sketchy election and daring to challenge the globalist establishment.

Compared to Trump’s other recent tariffs, these moves against Brazil really stand out. Yes, they’re overtly political, and they should be. The US has made it clear that they will not play nice with foreign regimes that crush free speech and jail opposition leaders.

Now, all eyes are on Judge Moraes. With the pressure mounting, Lula may be forced to toss him under the bus just to keep economic ties with the US intact.

It’s a smart move from Trump. He’s using America’s economic weight to slap down Brazil’s lawfare thugs and remind the world that judicial tyranny has consequences.

There’s a lot to be said about this, but Mike Benz summed it up best…

No doubt… Judge Moraes has to be sweating bullets right now.
