The case of the US senior airman who set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., is a grim reminder of where extreme leftist beliefs can lead. The 25-year-old was a self-described “anarchist” and was raised in a religious cult. He screamed “FREE PALESTINE” while he was engulfed in flames and eventually died. This disturbing incident shines a light on the dangerous paths liberalism can take. Looking into his past, we see yet another example of a lost soul caught in the swirl of twisted progressive ideologies, leading to a tragic end.

The Washington Post:

Less than two weeks before Aaron Bushnell walked toward the gates of the Israeli Embassy on Sunday, he and a friend talked by phone about their shared identities as anarchists and what kinds of risks and sacrifices were needed to be effective.

Bushnell, 25, mentioned nothing violent or self-sacrificial, the friend said.

Then on Sunday, Bushnell texted that friend, who described the exchange on the condition of anonymity to protect his safety.

“I hope you’ll understand. I love you,” Bushnell wrote in a message reviewed by The Washington Post. “This doesn’t even make sense, but I feel like I’m going to miss you.”

He sent the friend a copy of his will on Sunday. In it, he gave his cat to his neighbor and a fridge full of root beers to the friend.

Twelve minutes later, Bushnell, who was a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force, doused himself with a liquid and set himself on fire. He had posted a video online saying he did not want to be “complicit in genocide.” He shouted “Free Palestine” as he burned.

Secret Service officers extinguished the blaze. Bushnell died seven hours later at a hospital.
His suicidal protest instantly won him praise among some antiwar and pro-Palestinian activists, while others said they were devastated that he would take an action so extreme. But how a young man who liked The Lord of the Rings and karaoke became the man ablaze in a camouflage military uniform remains a mystery, even among some of his closest friends.

After news of this mentally ill man’s death spread, the term “rest in power” was trending on social media, and this made many progressive radicals very angry. According to Wikipedia, the phrase “rest in power” is supposedly used for people who have dedicated their lives to left-wing insanity and “activism” or those who have died due to so-called “oppression.” But it seems the term has been hijacked by Black Lives Matter, who use it to glorify criminals and thugs who’ve been in altercations with police and died as a result of their refusal to follow orders.

This young man was clearly battling severe mental health issues and needed psychiatric care. Regardless of the “Palestinian” cause he died for, the details don’t really matter to radical left-wing “activists.” No matter how extreme or insane his actions were for their cause, being a white man means he’ll always be an unworthy pariah.

Here’s a closeup of the image:

And here’s a closer look at the grossly obese white woman who made that comment about “rest in power” being exclusively for black folks.

In all honesty, that woman probably needs a mental exam and psychiatric treatment as well.

Revolver’s own Darren Beattie had some very interesting and humorously tongue-in-cheek insight on this man’s decision to burn himself alive for “Palestine” and how his stunt will likely play out in our “media ecosystem.”

Beattie:

Some poor idiot set himself on fire to make some kind of pro palestinian statement.

Leaving aside the fact that the cause is a foolish one, this dramatic gesture reflects a grave misunderstanding of prevailing media ecosystem.

It is simply impossible today to make a “statement” of any enduring gravity, a permanence of the sort achieved by Thích Quảng Đức, whose self-immolation protesting Diệm achieved photo of the year status in the early 60s.

Nothing like this is possible—every statement, every gesture, no matter how seemingly “serious” will at best be allowed to try on a handful of outfits graciously provided by the commentariat’s take machine, only to be quickly worn out and flushed away in the phantasmagoria of the news cycle.

In two weeks no one will be talking about this, in two months no one will remember or care.

This is not Thích Quảng Đức and this is certainly not Mishima, whose suicide is equal parts overrated and misunderstood for that matter.

—Contrary to popular understanding, Mishima was heterosexual, wrote great novels, and wanted to make Japan great again. And he didn’t kill himself — he posted on Facebook that he had information that would lead to the arrest of Hillary Clinton

Curiously, Aaron Bushnell won’t be depicted accurately as a radical left-wing extremist. Instead, he’ll be hailed as a makeshift anti-war hero who met a tragic end and was pretty fly for a white guy. This narrative twist is all part of the media’s effort to keep up the illusion that left-wingers are the norm while painting Trump supporters as the real threats to our nation.

Meanwhile, turning yourself into a human shishkabob will suddenly be the “sane” thing to do when protesting a scuffle, half a world away.
