You’d think a man accused of double murder, who not only reportedly killed the cop on the scene, but the innocent bystander who watched him do it, would be a “slam dunk” conviction for any US jury, right? Well, if that’s what you thought, you’d actually be wrong. In this day and age of “activist juries” and weaponized justice, nothing is a slam dunk anymore.

According to the police, Emmanuel Lopes was involved in a minor car accident on that day and subsequently fled the scene. Later, the police officer found Lopes hurling rocks at a house and approached him. At this point, Lopes reportedly threw boulder at the officers head, causing him to fall to the ground. According to prosecutors,  Lopes took the officer’s gun and shot him eight times in the head and chest.

After that, Lopes reportedly opened fire on two other officers who  arrived at the scene. He then allegedly fired three shots at Vera Adams, a 77-year-old woman who was observing all of this unfold from her living room window, and killed her as well.

And even after all of that, a jury was unable to convict.

CBS News:

A mistrial was declared Monday in the trial of c Lopes, the man charged with killing Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and innocent bystander Vera Adams back in 2018.

The Norfolk Superior Court jury in Dedham deliberated for days after getting the case late last month, but could not decide whether Lopes is a murderer or mentally ill.

“Jurors I’m in receipt of your note. Your service is complete. I’m declaring a mistrial.” said Judge Beverly Cannone.

Chesna’s widow Cindy broke down in tears in the courtroom after the judge’s announcement. A new trial with a new jury will begin July 21.

The jury foreperson has spoken out.

WCVB:

The foreperson of the jury that was not able to convict a Massachusetts man of murder in the deaths of a Weymouth police sergeant and an innocent bystander is speaking out Wednesday in the hopes of reaching the victims’ families.

“If a job is left unfinished, it leaves a really bad taste in your mouth — really bad feeling,” foreperson Cindy Lavoie said.

On Monday, a judge declared a mistrial in the case of Emmanuel Lopes, who was accused of killing Weymouth Sgt. Michael Chesna and bystander Vera Adams in July 2018.

Lavoie was the foreperson of the jury that was not able to reach a unanimous decision.

“We don’t want a mistrial. That was the No. 1 thing,” Lavoie said.

The defense did not dispute whether Lopes fatally shot Chesna, a 42-year-old military veteran and father of two, and Adams, a 77-year-old widow, but argued Lopes was unable to mentally understand his actions.

Lavoie said that when the jury first started their deliberations, there was an even split, but eventually, more jurors came to an agreement that Emanuel Lopes was guilty.

According to Lavoie, there was a one lone juror who agreed with the defense’s stance that Lopes was in the midst of a psychotic breakdown and didn’t know what he was doing. Lavoie said this lone juror completely disengaged with the group and would not join in on any discussions.

This is where we are at in 2023, folks: you can murder two people in cold blood and some random juror can decide that you were just having a “mental health episode” and didn’t knowingly do anything wrong.

There are unconfirmed rumors swirling about the identity and persona of this juror being reported by other media outlets that suggest that diversity is not quite our strength. The defendant in this case, Lopes, was a young Hispanic male. The claims suggest the juror is a female Hispanic zoomer, active on social media and frequently posting typical trash on TikTok, among other platforms. Revolver can’t confirm these reports at this time but will bring you more as the story develops. However, this story does highlight the crucial need for responsible, law-abiding Americans to fulfill their civic duty by serving on juries. Our system is in dire need of conscientious jurors now more than ever, so please, do your part.
