Rich Lowry, an unapologetic NeverTrump critic of President Trump, surprisingly has a better grasp on the current indictment situation than many others. Lowry hit the nail on the head in his analysis of the recent Trump-Bret Baier Fox News interview. First and foremost, Rich, unlike most other political pundits and critics of President Trump, understands that this is more of a “political” issue than a legal one at this stage of the game. Trump needed to go on Fox News and rally the troops behind him, and that’s precisely what he did.

Many supporters greatly appreciated when Trump called out Fox News for their “hostile” demeanor right to its smug face.

Any lawyer worth their salt can mop up any minor “legal miscues” Trump may have made during the interview. But, as Rich points out, legality was not the focus; it was politics, and Trump knocked it out of the park.

National Review:

Trump’s interview with Bret Baier has, understandably, gotten a lot of attention. It’s been pointed out that Trump didn’t help his legal case, but since there isn’t much help to be had there, I’m not sure how much that matters.

I believe Trump’s legal defense has to be, first and foremost, getting elected president to squash the case; and, failing that, getting pardoned by a Republican president in the event Trump doesn’t win the nomination; and failing that, convincing enough people that the case is unfair so a juror simply refuses to convict.

Given that the first step to becoming president is winning the GOP nomination, last night has to be considered a success for him. Trump had some rocky moments, especially when Baier asked about all the former officials who are no longer with him, but otherwise he was confident, unshakable, and charismatic. Bret Baier is an excellent interviewer and can’t be steamrolled like Kaitlan Collins. Still, Trump was a dominant presence.

There’s a long way to go until people caucus and vote, but Trump’s stage presence and ability to project strength are going to be as hard to match as ever.

Most of Trump’s detractors are out there celebrating as if he bombed the interview — once again, getting caught up in their hysterical hatred of Trump and unable to objectively analyze what’s truly happening here. This is why Trump often outwits his adversaries. They’re so fixated on celebrating his downfall that they fail to recognize the life-saving actions he’s taking.
