A photo featuring Metallica frontman James Hetfield alongside a Ukrainian soldier has sparked significant controversy. It seems that Hetfield, who was previously known for his advocacy of peace and opposition to war, has now shown an inclination towards chaos and violence. Reports suggest that he disturbingly told the injured Ukrainian soldier to “kill them all,” making a macabre reference to a well-known Metallica song.

Many are wondering why a Ukrainian soldier was in the U.S. for treatment, and that question is answered in this recent Billboard article on the meetup:

Ukrainian serviceman Roman Denysiuk was brought to the Vail Valley for treatment through the local non-profit Limbs For Liberty on May 11 after a fall from his wheelchair that resulted in him re-fracturing his femur and necessitating surgery to repair the leg.

Even more baffling is this strange new “love” of war that we see coming from formally peace-loving left-wingers like Metallica. These are the lyrics to an anti-war song “Disposable Heroes” from Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” album.

But it doesn’t end there. The band was strongly opposed to war, and they even composed a song called “One” that, ironically, socially and artistically defined them as a group.

Written by frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, ‘One’ is an anti-war song, which may come as a surprise. However, this is precisely the type of density that has made Metallica one of the most well-respected metal bands of all time.

The lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun, by iconic writer Dalton Trumbo, a classic critique of the horrors of World War I. Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older brother, David Hale, who once had a stint in Metallica.

Fittingly, the track explores the condition of a World War I soldier who has been critically wounded fighting. Echoing the work on Trumbo, Hetfield screams with primal force: “Trapped in myself / Body my holding cell / Landmine has taken my sight / Taken my speech / Taken my hearing / Taken my arms / Taken my legs / Taken my soul / Left me with life in hell.”

Hetfield and Metallica were making an anti-war social statement that was just as powerful as Rage Against the Machine’s.

Hetfield’s lyrics don’t stop there either. The central vocal refrain is “oh please, God, help me”, driving the anti-war sentiment home. The brilliance of ‘One’ is that it is elevated by the music video, which visually displays the song’s damning indictment of warfare. In the chilling video, the soldier sits up in his hospital bed, begging the nurse to “kill me” in Morse Code.

Things sure have changed in a relatively short amount of time. The left, who used to advocate for peace and be against war, have become quite the aggressive warmongers, eager for conflict and insisting on the demise of anyone they don’t agree with.

The charity work that “Limbs for Liberty” is doing is admirable, and this isn’t a criticism of their cause — although we do wonder who’s funding them. It’s an observation that the left has re-branded themselves. Clearly, liberals are willing to abandon their supposed heartfelt causes if it aligns with the government’s agenda. This tactic truly highlights the insincerity and propaganda nature of the progressive movement.
