Fox made a big mistake by firing Tucker Carlson. Their entire primetime lineup took a big hit in ratings, dropping 30% in the first week without him. And it’s not just Tucker’s slot that suffered — the whole block went down. In fact, none of Fox’s programs made it to the top 10 for the week and only three made it to the top 20. It’s a total bloodbath for Fox.

Will Fox News be able to bounce back from this ratings plunge? Many insiders believe that their only hope is to bring Tucker Carlson back, as he was the network’s most popular and influential host. Without him, they risk losing their status as the cable news “heavy-hitter.” Last week, Revolver reported on a story featuring Megyn Kelly and Buck Sexton discussing Fox’s next move and they don’t have many options, according to Megyn and Buck.

Revolver:

Will Fox News be forced to eat a gigantic helping of Carlson crow? That’s what Megyn Kelly and Buck Sexton are wondering. They believe that Fox News must do something to rectify the huge mess they created when they yanked Tucker off the air. Although Tucker has not been officially fired, his access to his shows and work email has been cut off, essentially sidelining him.

Megyn and Buck believe that the only way Fox News can undo their mistake is by bringing Tucker back. Buck put it best when he said that for the first time he believes Fox is in an “existential crisis” when it comes to viewers and Megyn agrees. Fox is currently hemorrhaging viewers during the 8:00 pm time slot and beyond; as Tucker supplied a huge lead-in for Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, and that’s now gone.

Megyn says the audience is giving Fox the “double-barrel middle finger,” saying, “You can eff right off Fox News, we don’t care who you put there. Where’s Tucker?”

Thanks to the Murdochs’ bonehead move, the entire Fox News primetime block is going down in flames.

LA Times:

Fox News Channel’s prime-time viewership in its first week without Tucker Carlson dropped 29.6% from the previous week.
Fox News Channel averaged 1.449 million viewers for its prime-time programming between April 24 and Sunday, third among cable networks, according to live-plus-same-day figures released by Nielsen on Tuesday. It averaged 2.058 million viewers the previous week when it did not have to face coverage of the NFL draft for two nights.

Fox News Channel had none of the week’s top 10 cable programs and only three in the 20 — two editions of “Hannity” and the first edition of “Fox News Tonight,” the network’s replacement for “Tucker Carlson Tonight” in the weeknight 8 p.m. time slot. The previous week Fox News had eight of the top 20 — five episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” (two of those in the top 10) and three episodes of “Hannity.” In Carlson’s final week before being fired, the final five editions of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” accounted for each of Fox News Channel’s five largest prime-time audiences.

It’s rumored that the Murdochs worked with left-leaning media outlets like the New York Times and Media Matters to attack Tucker’s character. But their plan has backfired spectacularly, because Tucker is more popular than ever before. Darren Beattie joined Steve Bannon on War Room to discuss this comically inept attempt to “destroy” Tucker.

Meanwhile, Tucker may be hosting an “alternate” GOP debate.

The National Pulse:

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson may host an alternative Republican primary forum, according to reports. The news may be enticing to former President Donald Trump, who is believed to be unhappy with the idea of debating head-to-head with single-digit candidates, in debates conducted by corporate media outlets and their establishment news anchors.

Tucker is even contemplating giving up the sizable paycheck he receives from Fox in order to reclaim his public voice.

Carlson is believed to be contracted to Fox until the end of 2024, but a “source close to” him told WaPo he is willing to walk away from at least some of the very substantial sums of money they are still due to pay him in order to regain his public voice.

WaPo claims “people in [Carlson’s] circle say” he wants to be more than just a podcaster, and has ambitions “to produce documentaries and host live events as well.”

The grandest event of this kind is “his own GOP candidate forum, outside of the usual strictures of the Republican National Committee debate system.”

Tucker’s got more options than a kid in a candy store, but Fox News is now struggling to crack the top 10. Looks like karma’s serving up a big ol’ slice of humble pie.
