In this fascinating documentary from 2018, a 32-year-old unmarried female Vice journalist goes to China to report on the phenomenon of China’s “leftover women”: the women over 25 who are still yet to be married.

Thanks to communism, there is a huge shortage of brides, and yet still, many of these women grew up as spoiled only children who were trained to think of their “careers” and to resent the “stifling” institution of marriage. This has created a huge and growing cultural backlash against feminism as more and more Chinese men remain single and unmarried.

But anyways, at the timestamp above, the Vice journalist makes an interesting admission: in China, there was a time when “strong working women” were idolized and featured heavily in Chinese propaganda. That time period? The height of communism, in the 1960s and 1970s.

During the 1980s, China reformed and became relatively more free, and that was the beginning of the end for the feminist revolution.

Quote: “The Iron Girls were the first targets to be condemned in the 1980s. They turned the discourse around naming these women as a symbol of how socialist women’s liberation masculinized women.”

The Vice journolady is extremely uncurious about this little factoid. There are ZERO conclusions to be drawn from this about the modern age West. Do NOT draw conclusions or recognize patterns, okay?
