Ted Cruz is moving like a man who believes 2028 is already underway. He came out swinging for the White House and used his feud with Tucker Carlson to kick things off and is also possibly throwing a handful of shade at President Trump. It’s subtle, but some argue it’s there, and it’s all wrapped around the latest manufactured outrage over Tucker interviewing a controversial guest.

Here’s the thing: Tucker is a journalist. Journalists talk to controversial people. That’s literally part of the job description. Barack Obama, one of the most divisive and destructively “controversial” political figures in modern history, still gets interviewed everywhere. And nobody on the right calls for censorship over it. Because censorship is not, and should never be, a conservative battle cry. If you don’t like what Tucker says or who he brings on his show, there’s an easy fix: don’t watch it. Critique it. Whatever you need to do.

Free speech can come with consequences. Democrats learned that the hard way when they mocked and celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Sure, they could say whatever gross things they wanted, but the public could also call out their ghoulish behavior and show their employers the carnage. Same deal here. Tucker can talk to whoever he wants, and viewers can tune in or tune out. That’s how free speech works in a healthy country.

Unfortunately, the Israel First crowd doesn’t see it that way. They want full control over what can be said, who can be interviewed, and what opinions are allowed. Question the Israeli government—just the government, not the Jewish people—and they will try to bury you under a mountain of nasty names: antisemitic, Nazi, Hitler, and the whole nine yards will be coming at you, full throttle. Tucker didn’t mock Jewish people. He didn’t shame them. He interviewed someone controversial and criticized a foreign government. That’s it. But for this faction, that was enough to launch a political holy war and try to blow up MAGA from the inside.

President Trump was just asked about the drama involving Tucker, and like a boss, he didn’t waver. Trump didn’t fold. He didn’t take the bait. He made it clear Tucker has every right to interview anyone he wants. It’s his show.

Amen. That’s the right answer, always. Bonus points, Trump also got testy with the rude Bloomberg reporter.

Nick Sortor:

🚨 PRESIDENT TRUMP DEFENDS
@TuckerCarlson: “I think he’s good!”

“He’s said good things about me over the years…”

“Look, you can’t tell him who to interview!”

47 then DESTROYED a Bloomberg “reporter” who interrupted 🤣

“Will you let me finish my statement? You are the WORST! I don’t know why they even have you.”

Then came the moment that raised some eyebrows. Sean Davis at The Federalist noticed it: Ted Cruz’s statement about “dangerous voices” in the movement and “reckless rhetoric” sure sounded like a passive-aggressive swipe, not just at Tucker, but maybe at President Trump for defending him. Axios says this is Ted “laying groundwork” for 2028.

Here’s a closeup of what Ted said.

A lot of folks see Ted positioning himself for 2028 and trying to curry favor with the Israel crowd. That’s been his lane for years. But there’s a problem. The old neocon guard is not coming back. MAGA doesn’t want it. MAGA won’t vote for it. And anyone trying to drag us back to the pre-Trump GOP is misreading the room by a mile.

We don’t need to tear Cruz down, and there’s no reason to get ugly. But it’s fair, and necessary, to point out that this isn’t the move. Attacking Tucker and possibly side-eyeing Trump to score points with donors is not a winning strategy. Not now. Not with this base. Not in this moment.
