Maybe “the map wars” is what history will remember this era as. The moment Republicans finally stopped playing defense and started beating Dems at their own redistricting game.

For eons now, Democrats have treated map-making like a full-blown contact sport, carving up states and reshaping districts to keep their death grip on power. They did it in Maryland, turning the state into a political black hole for Republicans. At this point, the GOP couldn’t win there even if they showed up with truckloads of fake ballots, and everyone knows it.
So when Gavin Newsom tried to pull his own stunt in California, padding the map with up to five new Democrat seats, he thought he was playing 4D chess.

What he didn’t count on was Republicans fighting back. In walks Ron DeSantis – the quiet guy, relaxing in sunny Florida, watching, waiting, and preparing to flip the whole board on its ear.
Because if the reports are right, Florida’s about to strike back and hit Newsom in the chops with a 1-2 punch.

If this plays out, DeSantis’s Florida map could flip three to five seats red, wiping out California’s gains in one swing. And it won’t stop there. States like Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Indiana are also looking to tighten their maps and reclaim some much-needed lost ground.
The left thought red states would play defense forever. We did too. Thankfully, we were all wrong. But this isn’t 2012 anymore; it’s 2025, and Trump’s back in the White House, these GOPers are going to have to fight, like it or not.
And speaking of the fight – when DeSantis redraws, he won’t hide behind “equity” or “representation.” He will proudly call it what it is: fair play.
DeSantis has made it clear: Florida isn’t sitting out this redistricting war. After Gavin Newsom’s California map handed Democrats up to five extra seats, the Florida governor is backing an aggressive counteroffensive. He’s already signaled full support for two major efforts — Trump’s call for a mid-decade census to reset the playing field, and a state-level plan to redraw congressional lines to give Republicans the upper hand.
At a recent press conference, DeSantis teased what’s coming, saying Florida could add “29, 30, maybe even 31” seats if undocumented immigrants are excluded from the count. Right now, Republicans hold 20 of Florida’s 28 seats, but his allies, including House Speaker Daniel Perez, believe tweaking district boundaries could flip another three to five — effectively canceling out California’s gains in one move.
The Florida Supreme Court has already given DeSantis the green light, upholding his previous map that wiped out Democrat strongholds in the north and cut into their remaining grip in the south. Now, a new “select committee on congressional redistricting” is gearing up to finish the job — targeting blue enclaves in South Florida held by establishment Democrats like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Jared Moskowitz.
To the left, it’s “gerrymandering.” To the right, it’s payback — long overdue.

So while Newsom was busy playing mapmaker-in-chief for Dems, the real game started shifting in Florida. DeSantis and Trump have been positioning. And now, it looks like the entire Republican machine is gearing up for a full-scale redraw.
President Trump’s push to expand the GOP’s congressional majority has the Florida team thinking big… really big.
DeSantis and Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez are ready for the “map wars.”
President Donald Trump’s push to secure and increase the Republican majority in Congress has Bill Helmich thinking of ways to claim all of Florida’s 28 congressional seats for the Grand Old Party.
Helmich, executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, told the Capital Tiger Bay Club on Oct. 29 that if the Florida Legislature were to call on him to help with redistricting, he could “sit down over a weekend and draw a map where there’s not a single Democratic member of Congress from Florida.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis supports redrawing congressional maps. And House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, formed a select committee to create new congressional lines.
Democrats used this system to build a firewall around their blue fortress. Now the red states are building one of their own, and when this new Florida map drops, Newsom’s little advantage will vanish, like a puff of hairspray.
