Several groups and pundits have rushed to condemn the Trump administrations recent executive order on flag burning, but it doesn’t appear to have much heft. Particular criticism came from libertarians and Never Trump figures on the right:
Burning the American flag is an expression of free speech, which has repeatedly been defended by the US Supreme Court. Patriotism doesn't mean blind allegiance to symbols. If you ban burning the flag, you wholly discredit what it represents.

STATEMENT: President Trump may believe he has the power to revise the First Amendment with the stroke of a pen, but he doesn’t.
Flag burning as a form of political protest is protected by the First Amendment. That’s nothing new.

But as liberal law professor Orin Kerr of Stanford clarified, the EO is only expected to result in visa withholdings, which are already likely.
Here's the order. The only part that seems like an actual action item is the part about immigration authorities withholding visas etc for foreign flag-burners (which presumably happens anyway).

Still, the order offers a chance for critics to restate their values, whether the threats are present, future, or theoretical.
