The Trump administration is finally tackling one of the most underreported national security threats in America today: foreign bad actors buying up US land.

On Tuesday, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi, and Governor Kristi Noem announced the “National Farm Security Action Plan.” This is a move to block nations like China, Russia, and Iran from snatching up farmland near critical and very sensitive infrastructure.

Sure, this is a strong start. But we’re sad to say it’s not nearly enough.

Because what we’re facing isn’t just about some random maze and cow pastures. It’s about homes, residential rentals, and land next to nuclear research labs. It’s also about coordinated foreign networks quietly embedding themselves into American soil, while our own agencies are watching and monitoring through the completely wrong lens.

First off, the idea that we ever allowed hostile nations to buy land inside the United States is absolutely absurd. And the fact that we’re just now getting serious about it is a national tragedy.

So, yes, President Trump is right to act. The legislation he backed last year, called the “Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act,” was a major step forward.

Fox 2 Now:

Following the lead of at least two dozen states, the Trump administration is promising to crack down on U.S. farmland purchases by foreign governments.

On Tuesday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the “National Farm Security Action Plan,” a multi-agency program aimed at preventing foreign influence in the U.S. agricultural industry.

“It’s time for our federal government to wake up and step up,” Rollins said at a Tuesday press conference outside the USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The 11-page plan addresses several national security threats, including bioterrorism and supply chain vulnerabilities. Its top priority is blocking foreign nationals—specifically from China—from purchasing land near critical infrastructure, such as military bases.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was among the top Trump administration officials present at the press conference. He called the action plan “common sense.”

“No longer can foreign adversaries assume we’re not watching, we’re not paying attention, and we’re not doing something about it,” Hegseth said.

According to 2023 USDA data, China owns approximately 265,000 acres of U.S. agricultural land, about 1% of total U.S. farmland. Overall, foreign entities own about 3.6% of U.S. farmland.

Amid growing national security concerns, House Republicans in 2024 passed the Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act. The legislation modifies the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), allowing for more stringent national security reviews when foreigners attempt to purchase U.S. farmland.

Democrats and advocacy groups like the American Civil Liberties Union opposed the bill. In a memo to lawmakers, the ACLU warned that the bill could unfairly target permanent residents and visa holders lawfully admitted to the U.S., writing that “the bill would likely result in discrimination.”

But the truth is a much harder pill to swallow: this problem is bigger, older, and way more sophisticated than any 11-page plan can handle.

We’re dealing with decades-long networks of land scouts, front companies, and high-ranking foreign agents buying property near some of our most sensitive national security assets. This goes far beyond agriculture.

These are foreign bad actors using sophisticated scouting networks, shell buyers, and long-game strategies to grab land in some of the most sensitive corners of America. We’re talking about residential homes near nuclear labs, property linked to Chinese military officers, and networks so deeply intertwined within the US that they’ve literally gone unnoticed for years.

And this thread breaks all of it wide open. If you want to understand how far gone we truly are and why the USDA’s plan isn’t nearly enough, this is where you need to start.

Jason Lewris:

I’ve been studying how Russian, Chinese and Iranian governments buy American land and residential housing for half a decade.

I’m going to break down why the USDA is grossly unprepared for this renewed effort with their announcement today on “National Farm Security Action Plan” and why this won’t work.

I’m going to share cases of property next to nuclear research facilities, sophisticated networks and strategies used, and how we can actually address this problem.

Let’s begin.

@SecRollins announced today alongside @SecDef, @AGPamBondi and @Sec_Noem a National Farm Security Action Plan

They shared the map at the bottom.

The map at the top is the actual state of affairs.

So why the difference and why are they unprepared for this task?

They even showed it in a video:

The Chinese, Russian and Iranian governments have an advanced network of land and property scouts here in the US that pre-purchase locations ahead of government takeover. They use the same scouts. These patterns are obvious if you know where to look. Here is one small network broken out by the trades over several decades. One result of this network?

What does this laboratory do?

Nuclear Deterrence
Threat Preparedness and Response
Energy Security
Multi-Domain Deterrence

To name a few.

Right next to their Chinese government neighbors.

Here’s another network of high ranking Chinese military officers in Seattle

Every single one of these properties are extricably linked with one another.

None of this is farmland.

American, single family homes.

So why is the USDA unprepared?

They are looking at the problem through one lens when this is a multidimensional relationship problem spanning:

US Farmland
US Land
US Residential Homes
US Residential Rentals
And many other housing/land asset classes.

The network shared above? Just one small component of what’s here right now

This thread lays out a smart, well-researched roadmap for actually tackling the problem. We highly recommend following Jason Lewris for more. You can follow him here.
