This story’s a couple years old, but it’s making the rounds again, and the timing couldn’t be better, with Gavin Newsom likely eyeing a 2028 presidential run.

It’s a perfect snapshot of the political dysfunction rotting this country from the inside out, especially in California. Remember the infamous California bullet train debacle? The one that was supposed to be a marvel of American infrastructure but turned into a flaming dung heap of taxpayer waste?

Here’s a quick update on the fiasco, which is now a full decade behind schedule and $10 billion over budget.

Kevin Dalton:

Gavin Newsom 2010: California is going to get it right with this new high speed rail. Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, has been trying – and failing – to build this railway for a ridiculous 17 years.

And yet, nobody seems to know where all that money went.

But the real kicker in this sad saga of wasted money and classic establishment failure? A highly competent French national rail company pulled out of California’s “train to nowhere” project because it was so disorganized. It was such a bureaucratic mess that the French ditched Newsom and went to North Africa instead, because – get this – it was more “politically functional” than the state of California under Gavin’s direction.

Ouch.

Washington Examiner:

A French national railroad company left California’s high-speed rail project to pursue other work in North Africa — and has already completed a project in Morocco.

SNCF, the French national railroad, was one of the original operators to come to California in the early 2000s to help develop the state’s “bullet train” that would run from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The rail company, however, opted to leave for the war-torn, yet “less politically dysfunctional,” North African country.

“There were so many things that went wrong,” SNCF Project Manager Dan McNamara told the New York Times. “SNCF was very angry. They told the state they were leaving for North Africa, which was less politically dysfunctional. They went to Morocco and helped them build a rail system.”

And of course, there’s a DEI angle, because with a collapse this bad, how could there not be, right? Tech giant TSMC tried building semiconductors in the US under the CHIPS Act but ran straight into a wall of DEI mandates and bureaucratic nonsense. It was such a mess, they scrapped the whole thing.

Will Tanner:

This is obviously true, and while the Green stuff gets a great deal of blame, the DEI disaster is equally problematic For example, TSMC tried investing billions in US semi-conductor production under the CHIPS Act, but gave up because the DEI requirements made it utterly impossible to do anything productive here

What a costly debacle.

If Gavin Newsom does run in 2028, this story is bound to resurface yet again, because nothing sums up his brand of leadership better than a billion-dollar train wreck. The man turned San Francisco into a crime-ridden, poop-infested wasteland, dragged California into the red, and scared off some of the most competent rail engineers on the planet. If his plan is to take that chaos national, maybe his campaign slogan should be: Make America More Dysfunctional Than North Africa.
