‘Madden’ Actor Exits Set After David O. Russell Uses N-Word

May 21, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

David O. Russell’s untitled John Madden biopic— a high-profile project with Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale in lead roles— has reportedly hit early turbulence just two weeks into production.

According to my sources, tensions flared on set after Russell allegedly used the N-word during a spontaneous monologue workshop, prompting one actor and several others to walk off.

Sources on set say the actor, who had been workshopping the scene with Russell, took immediate offense, leading to a disruption in the shoot. This then led to half a team of actors, all playing football players, walking out in protest.

Sources close to the production say the actor who triggered the walkout was wearing an earpiece, with Russell feeding him lines during a loosely improvised monologue session. Things reportedly went south when Russell began inserting the N-word into the dialogue—language the actor immediately found offensive and refused to repeat.

That’s when, according to a source, Russell lost his temper, allegedly shouting, “Just f*cking say it!” The filmmaker is also said to have “belittled” other actors on set who backed away from the scene, creating what some described as a hostile atmosphere.

This incident came on the heels of another reported confrontation between the same actor and Russell over a full-frontal locker room scene. While Amazon insists all cast members were informed of the nudity well in advance, crew members say the director’s handling of the actor’s objections was far from professional.

The film, which stars Cage as NFL icon John Madden and Bale as Raiders legend Al Davis, follows Madden’s post-coaching years as he works to reshape his legacy through the creation of the first football video game. Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney, and Shane Gillis round out the cast. Amazon is reportedly still in talks to bring the departed actor back into the fold.
