Shannon Peterson used to welcome migrants, then they came to her neighbourhood. “If it was not for Donald Trump, we still might be living next to gang members,” Mrs Peterson told me outside her home in Aurora, Colorado. For thirty years she voted for every Democrat Presidential candidate, starting with Bill Clinton. She even ran a group called “Teachers United For Immigrant Rights”. Now she is a diehard Trump supporter, and even bought a gun (despite being a previous advocate for gun control). It all began early last year, when Mrs Peterson, a softly spoken school teacher, began to hear gunshots outside of her home. Neighbours reported seeing signs of prostitution, cars sped at dangerous speeds down back alleys joy racing, and walls became splattered with bullet holes. Soon she was forced to form a neighbourhood watch, where residents could report incidents to each other over WhatsApp and co-ordinate calls to the police. What Mrs Peterson didn’t know was that a deadly Venezuelan gang had moved into an apartment block just meters from her home. In Joe Biden’s four-year Presidency more than 7 million illegal immigrants entered the United States. It was the issue that defined the 2024 election, and was part of the reason Donald Trump won his second term. Mrs Peterson was not the only Democrat who turned to Trump following the arrival of the Venezuelan gang members. Cindy Romero, an Amazon worker, actually lived in the apartment block that was under siege by illegal aliens. As soon as the incidents began, Mrs Romero set up cameras outside of her front door, and what they discovered shook the Presidential election campaign and made headlines around the world. Gang members carrying large rifles, breaking into homes to set up camp, young men running from shots fired in a gunfight outside, and much more. The locals in the apartments that were occupied soon fled. Not Mrs Romero. She refused to leave her home, that was until a gang member came to her door one day and told her not to call the police on him and his friends. Hours later that same Venezuelan was shot outside her home, and would later die in hospital. Mrs Romero had tried calling the police, but felt they didn’t respond soon enough or care enough about her safety. One police officer told her to try reaching out to the media, and so she did. Her videos went viral, so much so they captured the eye of the Trump campaign, and Mrs Romero, another lifelong Democrat, backed the man promising mass deportations of illegal migrants.
