Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones, according to a statement released Sunday by his personal office.
The update followed recent medical evaluations prompted by Biden’s worsening urinary symptoms. “Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said, according to CNN.
"Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery," President Donald Trump posted.
Doctors have categorized the cancer as aggressive, but they noted that it remains responsive to hormone treatment. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement continued.
It is an unfortunate development for the former president, who has repeatedly pledged to tackle cancer. In a peculiar speech delivered at the White House on Tuesday, Biden falsely declared his administration has managed to “end cancer as we know it.”
“If you could do anything at all Joe, what would you do?” Biden hypothetically asked. He then said, “I said I’d cure cancer, and they looked at me like ‘why cancer?’ Because nobody thinks we can. That’s why, and we can. We ended cancer as we know it!”
Biden has made similar remarks in the past, including during his 2022 State of the Union address. He also made curing cancer a central promise during his 2019 presidential campaign.
The Biden White House has promoted a national initiative called the Cancer Moonshot, which aims to prevent more than 4 million cancer deaths by 2047 and seeks to “improv[e] the experience of people who are touched by cancer.” This is a breaking news story. Refresh for updates.
