Steve Bannon sauntered into the World Economy Summit—and lit a fuse nobody’s putting out anytime soon.
The first thing he did was refuse to tiptoe around the mess America’s in right now. He didn’t waste time with polite, focus-grouped nonsense. Instead, Bannon laid the whole ugly reality out plain and simple: the system is rotting, and if something drastic doesn’t change fast, the future we’re heading toward is one where crooks and clowns are celebrated as heroes.

Yes, we know it already feels that way, but it can and will get worse.
We’re going to walk you through Bannon’s raw warnings and his escalating battle with Elon Musk and the stark reality facing every American right now. Because the truth is, what the populist movement offers might not be perfect—but it’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative.
Before we get into the deeper financial rot and political backstabbing Bannon exposed, you need to hear how he set the stage.
He didn’t start off just talking numbers—he showed the human cost of this very broken system.

Bannon warned that if Americans don’t demand real change, the next generation will grow up idolizing criminals and con men… because there won’t be anything else left but these dregs.

Luigi Mangione “has been treated like a hero,” Steve Bannon tells @semaforben. “That should scare you to the marrow of your bones because that’s the alternative if the system keeps going like it is.” “The populist nationalists offer something you’re not gonna love, but you’ll be able to live with.” #WorldEconomySummit

Bannon wasn’t done after warning about the future collapse. He turned his fire straight at Elon Musk and the so-called reformers, demanding real answers about what’s actually been uncovered inside the bloated, corrupt federal government. Bannon made it clear: vague promises and half-measures won’t cut it anymore.
Steve Bannon, US President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, on Wednesday said that before Elon Musk pulls back from his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, he needs to make clear what fraud and waste in the federal government has been uncovered. “We need to have a very specific accounting of what he found, as far as fraud goes and waste, and I mean details,” said Bannon.
“None of this makes sense.” Bannon also said he wants a letter of certification showing that no one has taken any data from the Trump administration or government, to which Semafor’s editor-in-chief Ben Smith asked, “Sounds like you don’t trust [Musk] not to take data?” “Trust, but verify,” Bannon responded.
While Bannon has supported DOGE’s efforts, he has called Musk “evil,” in an escalating clash with the tech billionaire. Bannon said Wednesday that DOGE was “a blunt-force instrument” that was needed to gut government waste, but that the cuts made to the federal government so far are only “programmatic,” noting that DOGE hasn’t turned up much from the Pentagon. The Pentagon and other facets of the federal government’s discretionary spending are where Bannon wants to see budget cuts to pay for tax cuts.
“Unless you do that, the math doesn’t work out,” Bannon said, noting that the US has added $1.3 trillion to the federal deficit so far this year. “The current system we have is not sustainable. It’s just not.”
We also covered this in a piece where Bannon made it clear—the math just isn’t “mathing.”
Steve Bannon is asking the questions nobody else wants to touch. He’s looking at the numbers behind all the big promises being made right now—and calling it like he sees it. According to Bannon, the math just doesn’t work. It’s not adding up, and he’s right to be concerned.
Right now, we’ve got leaders out there promising major economic growth, no new taxes, and a bright financial future. But here’s the problem—where are the cuts? Everyone’s talking big, but no one’s saying how we’re going to pay for any of it. You can’t keep spending like crazy and pretend everything’s fine. That’s not how real life works. Even cutting just a little—$150 billion—hasn’t been brought up.
Then there’s the heart of the problem: The Pentagon. Bannon points out what most of us already know: that place is overflowing with waste and horrific spending. And yet, absolutely nothing has been done to fix this. If we’re serious about making changes, Bannon says we can’t keep giving defense a free pass. He says there’s a ton of money being thrown away.
And Bannon’s last point hits hard—he says we’re getting dangerously close to a financial breaking point. The entire world is buried in massive debt. And eventually, someone’s going to come calling for that money. And when that happens, it won’t just hit Wall Street—it’ll hit everything. That kind of pressure doesn’t just magically go away. If people lose confidence in how the US is handling things, the whole system falls apart.
In this latest WarRoom clip, Bannon lays it out in plain terms everyone can understand. But keep in mind, he’s not attacking Trump or Elon—this isn’t personal. He’s just pointing out that you can’t run a country on pipe dreams. Sooner or later, the numbers have to add up and make sense. And if we don’t get serious about cutting spending, something’s going to give…

And now, back at the World Economic Summit, Bannon continued to paint a broad picture and a vision of what’s really on the line. The truth is, the populist path forward isn’t going to be pretty or perfect for everybody… but it’s the only way to survive. Because the other option is a future most Americans will crumble under.

After laying out the stakes, Bannon got down to the cold, hard truth: The political games of the past aren’t going to save us. He called out guys like Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist, reminding them that this isn’t the 1990s anymore. Bannon said we’re staring down a $37 trillion debt and a trillion-dollar deficit every hundred days. That means the old playbook is dead, and if we don’t change course fast, we’re finished.
War Room” host Steve Bannon spoke about the larger strategy of the Trump administration with Ben Smith at Semafor’s 2025 World Economy Summit. Bannon commented on criticism from Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist on reports that Trump could raise taxes on the rich: If comparing Trump to Bush in 1992 is “the best Grover and Newt have got to come with, they’ve lost their fastball.”
“That was a totally different time,” Bannon said. “We didn’t have $37 trillion of debt, we didn’t have $2-2.5 trillion in deficits, we’re not adding a trillion dollars every hundred days. Something’s got to change, and it has to change fundamentally.” About his alleged behind-the-scenes feud with Elon Musk, Bannon said: “It’s not about personalities, right?”
“But we have to be very specific before he leaves to go back to Tesla, we need to have an accounting,” he also said. “And I mean details. Treasury’s got to sign off, OMB’s got to sign off, and every department head. We need to know exactly where he found because he went from two trillion a year to one trillion a year to $150 billion next year, with nothing this year.”
“You can’t be serious if you’re talking about waste, fraud, and abuse in our system unless you’re in the Pentagon, finding out how it really operates.” “The alternative the populist nationalists offer is an alternative that you can see the sunlit uplands,” Bannon said.
“Tons of change has to happen, but the other alternative, I’m telling you, is this Luigi guy. He’s treated like a hero, he’s treated like Robin Hood. That should scare you to the marrow of your bones because that’s the alternative if the system keeps going like it is. That alternative is your alternative. We offer, the populist nationalists offer, something you’re not going to love, but you’ll be able to live with.”
At the end of the day, the left is busy glorifying grifters and criminals while the rest of us are fighting to clean up the mess and save what’s left of this country. But if we’re going to get back on track, we have to be honest about where we stand—financially, culturally, and politically.

The numbers are ugly, the choices aren’t perfect, but the cold truth is this: populism is the only real path forward.
It’s not about loving every solution—it’s about survival. Because the alternative is national suicide.
