According to a joint statement put out by the Ukrainian and US governments after a meeting with US and Ukraine officials, "Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation. The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."
"The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine," the statement added.
The joint statement concluded with, “Lastly, both countries’ presidents agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources to expand Ukraine’s economy, offset the cost of American assistance, and guarantee Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and security.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that they US will now take the offer to the Russians, and added that the "ball is in their court" to bring peace in the war.
This comes after President Donald Trump has pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky be more willing to accept a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine as well as a meeting at the White House that ended with a clash between the nation's leaders.
The mineral deal between the United States as well as Ukraine will allow for there to be an economic interest for the US in the region. Zelensky had demanded in the meeting earlier in the year that Ukraine should get explicit security guarantees from the US in order to bring the war to a close, which Trump was resistant to.
With the economic interest in Russia, the Kremlin may be more hesitant to attack the Ukraine region in the future if US companies are there, mining the rare earth minerals.
