Darren Beattie, who was recently appointed as the State Department’s Senior Official in Public Diplomacy, shared a sneak peek into the reopening of the National Museum of American Diplomacy (NMAD). In his X post, Darren commended the NMAD team for a “fascinating” tour that highlighted some unique artifacts—like an AK-47-shaped vodka bottle gifted to Secretary Colin Powell during his trip to Russia and a historic chunk of the Berlin Wall. These pieces showcase the richness and vastness of American diplomatic history.

Senior Official for Public Diplomacy:

Thanks and great job to the @NMADmuseum team for a fascinating tour of @StateDept forthcoming National Museum of American Diplomacy. We viewed signature pieces of diplomatic history, including an AK-47 shaped vodka bottle gifted to Sec. Powell on a trip to 🇷🇺 and a historic piece of the Berlin Wall. Much more to see when the Museum opens in 2026.

It’s refreshing to see America celebrated for once instead of torn down.

The NMAD is located at the 21st Street entrance of the Harry S. Truman Building in Washington, DC. It’s the first museum telling the full story of American diplomacy. While it opened to preview some exhibits, it closed on December 16, 2024, to begin construction and install its new, permanent exhibitions. The museum is set to reopen in early 2026.

Darren’s new role fits right in with the museum’s mission. With his background as a media entrepreneur, political strategist, and former academic, he’s bringing a bold, America First approach to using free speech as a diplomatic tool. Beattie is pushing America’s cultural achievements—in arts, music, and academia—to advance our national interests, and that lines up with what NMAD is all about: educating the public on the history, practice, and challenges of American diplomacy.

So, as the NMAD gets ready to unveil its permanent exhibitions in 2026, Darren’s insights and pictures give us a cool sneak peek at what’s to come. The museum’s mission to highlight the importance of diplomacy in shaping our nation’s history is truly inspiring, and we’re looking forward to its reopening.

This museum should definitely be on your list if you’re planning a trip to DC in 2026.
