“We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Very bad news for Zelensky and the Ukraine.

It’s become routine since Russia invaded Ukraine: President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speak by phone whenever the U.S. announces a new package of military assistance for Kyiv.

But a phone call between the two leaders in June played out differently from previous ones, according to four people familiar with the call. Biden had barely finished telling Zelenskyy he’d just greenlighted another $1 billion in U.S. military assistance for Ukraine when Zelenskyy started listing all the additional help he needed and wasn’t getting. Biden lost his temper, the people familiar with the call said. The American people were being quite generous, and his administration and the U.S. military were working hard to help Ukraine, he said, raising his voice, and Zelenskyy could show a little more gratitude.

What an ingrate.

The main event of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House was supposed to be the signing of a minerals deal, but it quickly devolved into an argument with President Trump and Vice President Vance.

What they’re saying: After an intense exchange in which Vance accused Zelensky of disrespecting Trump by “trying to litigate” U.S. policy on Ukraine in front of the media and noted Ukraine’s manpower problems, an exasperated Zelensky replied that Vance had never set foot in Ukraine.

State of play: The visit comes as the Trump administration pushes for a ceasefire in the war between Ukraine and Russia to be followed by peace negotiations.

Zelensky said at the top of the meeting that the U.S. was “on our side” from the beginning of the war “and I think that Trump is on our side.”

  • He added that he is sure U.S. assistance to Ukraine will continue, adding: “This is crucial for us.”
  • He stressed that it was Russia that started the war “and they have to stop” and withdraw from Ukrainian territory.

The latest: Trump said at the top of the meeting with Zelensky that the minerals deal is “fair” and it “a big commitment by the U.S.”

  • Trump said Ukrainian soldiers, generals and Zelensky himself were “very brave” during the war “but now we want to get it over with. It’s enough.”
  • The U.S. wants to use the minerals “for all of the things we do, including AI and including weapons and the military,” Trump said.

Zoom in: The minerals deal is a framework agreement that lays out general details about the economic partnership the U.S. and Ukraine are establishing.

  • The agreement says Ukraine and the U.S. will now negotiate more detailed arrangements for the joint fund.
