An Interview with Tucker Carlson and a Boost from Elon Musk
And other exciting developments as my book launches
When you are a writer and your name isn’t J.K. Rowling, you are always eager to do anything you can that can bring some publicity to the work you’ve been slaving over in your office for months or even years. After all what good is writing if nobody is reading it?
So when I was able to get an opportunity to talk about my new book with Tucker Carlson the day after it launched, I jumped at it, of course. Even though he’s no longer on Fox, Tucker still has arguably the biggest and most influential reach in conservative media. Given that we filmed it Live from the Studios in Bozeman, MT! (i.e. someone’s townhome with a minimal a/v setup) and dealt with predictable technical snafus, I actually thought it came off very well. (link will take you to the stream)
If you haven’t done a lot of TV, you may not realize that if a guest is not in studio, he is usually just staring at a camera and can’t even see the host. It takes some time and practice to be “natural” in that environment, and while I’d still like to do better, I would say that I’ve improved a good bit over the years.
But while Tucker’s reach is huge, Elon Musk’s is even bigger, and when he took an interest in my broadcast, it went to the next level. Less than a day in, we are sitting at 21 million views of the stream and over 170,000 likes between Elon’s post and Tucker’s.
For a writer, that is pretty much a dream, and it sent my book soaring up the Amazon charts. I am now, as it turns out, the #1 best-seller in African American studies, among other distinctions.
Tucker’s clip of course attracted attention and future media opportunities, and I’ll be detailing those in the future. But there were a number of other noteworthy media items that already dropped this week.
First, I have an excerpt of my book at The Federalist, (full article at link) in which I discuss the parallels between America’s immigration system and the one that doomed ancient Rome.
And beyond that, I did extended podcasts with Josh Hammer of Newsweek and Auron MacIntyre of the Blaze. These were both even more extended than my show with Tucker.
Josh and Auron are both, like Tucker, very smart and thoughtful commentators and it was great to be able to discuss my book at length with both of them.
Thanks to everyone for their support, and again, if you’re interested in the topics I am discussing, be sure to share this Substack and, better yet, become a subscriber if you aren’t one already.
