The conservative right is sharpening its skills to counter the left’s social and political tyranny. We’re not all the way there yet, but progress is undeniable. Take our approach to the “woke” culture as a prime example. We flipped the script, turning “woke” into a term so laden with negative vibes that both companies and individuals started steering clear of it. Now, we’re applying the same strategy to DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) programs, critiquing their focus on skin color, gender identity, and sexual preference over actual skills and abilities, and we’re seeing the same outcome as we did with the “woke” movement. Companies and people are backing away from the unfair, “charity-based” concept. One of the first institutions to reject DEI is the University of Florida, which has just fired all employees related to DEI.

This is the first sure-fire sign that the conservative counter-revolution is underway.

The university didn’t just stop at letting the DEI hires go; they’ve completely eliminated the DEI officer position and cut ties with DEI vendors. It’s a significant shift away from previous practices.

Alligator:

UF fired 13 full-time diversity, equity and inclusion positions and ended 15 administrative appointments for faculty Friday. It also eliminated the office of the Chief Diversity Officer and ended DEI contracts with outside vendors, according to a Friday memo.

The memo follows a 2023 Florida statute prohibiting the university from spending state or federal funds on DEI initiatives, which was approved by the Florida Board of Governors in its final form Jan. 24.

The about $5 million that was previously allocated to DEI expenses will now fund faculty recruitment.

The office’s website listed it had three employees including CDO Marsha McGriff, Farrah Harvey and Wilma Rogers.

The memo did not disclose the future of the Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement, which received over $400,000 in the 2022-2023 UF operating budget, 85% of which was state-funded. The center oversees offices for Asian, Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ+ student engagement.

Employees fired will receive a 12-week severance pay and can apply for other positions within the university. Hiring for those employees will be fast-tracked, the memo added.

“The University of Florida is — and will always be — unwavering in our commitment to universal human dignity,” the memo said. “As we educate students by thoughtfully engaging a wide range of ideas and views, we will continue to foster a community of trust and respect for every member of the Gator Nation.”

And while Kamala Harris isn’t the brightest bulb in the box, even she can see the writing on the wall for the future of DEI.

Kamala has every reason to feel the heat. Conservatives are no longer in the mood to watch from the sidelines as these unworkable policies embed themselves into our system, only to react after they’ve taken firm root. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This mindset has seeped into some of our most crucial institutions, including the aviation and medical industries—two sectors where we definitely can’t afford to have decisions made based on anything other than merit and expertise.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis is basking in the success, eager to see this trend catch on with more universities across the country.

This is a topic Revolver has been covering from all different angles for quite some time now.

Revolver:

The aggressive substitution of merit in favor of diversity has led to a so-called competency crisis, jeopardizing not only our ability to generate innovative technology but, in a more dire sense, our ability to simply maintain the proper functioning of various complex systems vital to our existence as a first-world civilization. Despite the superficiality of “diversity” as a matter of rhetoric, the reality of diversity as an ideological, cultural, and legal imperative is not merely cosmetic—far from it.

While a full treatment of this topic would run far outside the scope of this article, we have discussed elsewhere the manner and extent to which the affirmative action regime is embedded deeply into the law, economy, and every major institution in the country.

Richard Hanania and Revolver’s Darren Beattie and Richard Hanania recently explored at length the scourge of civil rights law and its impact on the diversity regime.

Delighted to share this conversation on the “Origins of Woke” between me and Richard Hanania on X

Despite the fact that references to “wokeness” seemingly everywhere in our political discourse, precious little attention given to what it actually is, and still less to its origins.

Until recently the dominant account for wokeness invoked the influence of European import philosophies (marxism, post-modernism, etc).

By contrast, Hanania’s account of wokeness traces its development within the context and peculiarities of American law, and particularly within certain innovations of civil rights law.

Our conversation critically engages this thesis, touching upon disparate impact law, Title IX, and other forms of affirmative action.

We also touch upon broader questions surrounding wokeness and Hanania’s thesis.

To what extent is “wokeness” a fundamentally feminine phenomenon–a poisonous synergy of feminine political id liberated at scale by social media?

To what extent is some version of wokeness inevitable in a diverse society? Is it possible that every diverse society requires some kind of patronage politics and that wokness is simply how this is expressed in the Anglosphere?

For this and more, watch below.

Hope you enjoy the convo.
