CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office has provided new information in the arrest of a man, who is in the US illegally, for sexual assault against a minor.

Renzo Mendoza Montes, 32 and a citizen of Venezuela, is charged with two felonies.

Deputies say the charges stem from an incident in January 2024 involving Montes and a 14-year-old female acquaintance from Campbell County.

Montes was charged with the following:

  • One felony count of Carnal Knowledge of a Child Without Force
  • One felony charge of Taking Indecent Liberties with a Minor

The sheriff’s office says Mendoza was detained and released by US Customs and Border Patrol in El Paso, Texas in September 2023.

Mendoza is being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.

Sheriff Whit Clark says, “Due to the fact that is an active investigation, the sheriff’s office will not be releasing any additional details related to the case. We are especially sensitive to the fact that these crimes involve a young juvenile who lives here within our community. Like any criminal investigation conducted by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, upholding the integrity of a case is priority for our department and the Campbell County Commonwealth’s Attorney.”
