Haley-Supporting Governor Flames Senator for Endorsing Trump: ‘Tim Scott Wouldn’t Have a Job without Nikki’
Republican Governor Chris Sununu torched Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) for endorsing Donald Trump for president, saying, “Nobody cares” what Scott thinks.
Scott’s endorsement is something of a betrayal of Republican presidential candidate and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who appointed Scott to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat in 2013. Haley is seeking to upend the GOP race by defeating Trump in Tuesday’s primary. Polls have shown Trump running ahead of Haley in the Granite State, though one recent poll has the two tied.
Sununu appeared on Friday’s edition of The Story on Fox News, where he was asked for his reaction to Scott’s endorsement.
“One of the big pieces of news is this endorsement by Tim Scott,” Martha MacCallum said. “It’s our understanding that he is on his way to Florida, will come to New Hampshire, and rally with President Trump tonight. How much of a blow is that to the campaign that you support for Governor Haley?”
“First, Tim Scott wouldn’t have a job without Nikki Haley,” Sununu said before noting Scott was also once a candidate for this year’s GOP nomination. “Nobody cares what Tim Scott thinks. If they did, he actually wouldn’t have been driven out of this race three months ago.”
Sununu went on to repeat Haley’s talking point about the Senate being a “privileged nursing home” for “overpaid and underworked” lawmakers.
“They get frustrated because someone’s actually gonna become president that holds them accountable that holds them to fiscal discipline that actually wants to drain the swamp,” he added. “That’s what Nikki’s trying to do. You shouldn’t be surprised that senators feel threatened by it because they’ve basically made a career out of public service.”
While appearing on Newsmax last week, Sununu reacted similarly to Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) endorsement of Trump.
“I’m sorry, but nobody cares what Rand Paul thinks in this race,” he said.
