largely the Russian lower classes were un armed...that possibly worked against the status quo ironically. Diisarming the people dates to Rome. We tend to forget Russia was largely part of the eastern empire that actually never really collapsed like the western empire. Interesting in view of an "intelligetsia" acquiring the state security apparatus which is what really happened. as usual conservatives miss the mark when analyzing the progressive era. Germany and the West didn't go in and crush the revolution because they were supposed to be the main benefactors of the tsar's removal, which Lenin was there to mediate once the new government was established. But stalin took over and removed all the radicals who were being financed by western powers, had lenin killed and trotsky exiled. Stalin, by contrast to trotsky and lenin, was a nationalist. all we have to do to understand the differences is look at where both Russia and Germany were in 1920 compared to now. Russia became a super power nation because of stalin despite the savage brutality he deployed to achieve it. he didn't do anything that russia's enemies weren't planning to do to them in spades. Stalin, unlike hitler, had legitimacy with the governed.
