Are you old enough to remember when the Polish government was one of the staunchest and most hard-core supporters of Ukraine? Well, times have changed, and the Polish government has completely shifted its stance. It’s been quite a sight to see and has many folks scratching their heads wondering what the heck happened. Well, much of the new bad blood stems around “grain,” but there’s more to it than that.

Beata Maria Szydło is a Polish politician who has served as a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. She didn’t take kindly to Zelensky’s snarky comment about the “grain issue,” so she called him out on X.

This is what Zelensky said:

We opened a temporary sea export corridor. We’re working to preserve land routes. Alarmingly, some in Europe play out solidarity in a political theater—turning grain into a thriller. They may seem to play their own roles. In fact they’re helping set the stage for a Moscow actor.

And here was Beata’s blistering response:

The President of Ukraine is at the UN forum complaining about… well, what exactly? The Ukrainian grain transit corridor existed and exists. Unfortunately, it was the Ukrainian oligarchs who abused this opportunity and flooded the markets of EU countries with grain, instead of transporting it further. @ZelenskyyUa’s claims today are insinuations, unworthy of such a serious politician.

Yes, grain is an issue between the two countries, but it goes deeper than that.

So, what’s at the heart of all this new animosity?

Votes.

The Guardian:

To hear the Polish president compare Ukraine to a drowning person and the Ukrainian president describe Poland as acting in Moscow’s interests will come as a shock to many.

Poland was one of the few western countries that had an ambassador who stayed in Kyiv through the first days of the Russian invasion, and its president, Andrzej Duda, has been a frequent visitor to the Ukrainian capital.

Poland welcomed more than 2 million refugees in the first weeks of the war and millions of Polish people helped out with housing and other volunteer support for displaced Ukrainians.

This all makes the intensity of the rhetoric in the rift over grain imports harder to understand, but it may have more to do with internal politics in Poland than with real issues between the two capitals.

Polls suggest parliamentary elections on 15 October will be an extremely close-run race, and the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is looking for boosts to its support wherever possible.

Let’s cut to the chase: the Ukraine war isn’t winning any popularity contests worldwide, and that’s why Polish politicians are steering clear. Folks from every corner of the globe have one question: why aren’t world leaders pushing for peace talks? It’s a valid question, especially when you consider the astronomical sums of money sent to Ukraine with zero transparency about where it’s going or how it’s being spent, all for a war they can’t win. Instead of clamoring for peace talks, “world powers” like the U.S. keep pumping money into Ukraine without batting an eye. Why? It’s a baffling situation. The only ones who seem to support this war are clueless left-wing radicals and the political elite. The rest of the world has had its fill and is demanding a resolution. The situation in Poland is a prime example of that and similar sentiments are brewing closer to home, as well.

It’s understandable that the American people are growing weary of this situation. We’re channeling billions of dollars to a country halfway across the globe with seemingly no resolution in sight and a lack of transparency, all while our own nation faces challenges and our citizens endure hardships. It’s time to say enough is enough.
