Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian oligarch and mercenary leader who some allege attempted to overthrow Putin, has died in a fiery plane crash, according to Russian reports.

Reports state that a private jet belonging to Prigozhin crashed with 10 people on board, resulting in everyone’s death. According to the plane’s manifest, the oligarch, who was once a close friend of Vladimir Putin, was among those on board.

Telegraph:

Yevgeny Prigozhin has been killed in a private jet crash in the Tver region north of Moscow, Russian agencies have reported.

The Wagner mercenary boss was on board the aircraft when it crashed killing all 10 passengers, authorities have said.

According to Russia’s federal air transport agency: “An investigation of the Embraer plane crash that happened in the Tver Region this evening was initiated.

“According to the passenger list, first and last name of Yevgeny Prigozhin was included in this list.”

The flight appears to have been travelling between Moscow and St Petersburg. Wagner-linked Telegram channels have reported that the plane was shot down by Russian air defences.

Mr Prigozhin led an abortive coup against Russia’s military leadership in June, which ended after Wagner fighters were promised amnesty in neighbouring Belarus.

This viral video online purports to capture the crash in real time.

Back in June, Prigozhin denied the “coup allegations,” insisting that he was just “protesting,” not attempting to overthrow the Russian leader back in June, but the plane crash indicates that the Kremlin likely didn’t view it that way.

Reuters:

Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Monday that a one-day mutiny by his Wagner force had been intended not to overthrow Russia’s government but to register a protest over what he said was its ineffectual conduct of the war in Ukraine.

In his first public comments since ending the mutiny late on Saturday, Prigozhin repeated his frequent claim that Wagner was the most effective fighting force in Russia “and even the world”, and that it put to shame the units that Moscow had sent into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

He said the way it had been able to seize the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don without bloodshed and to send an armed convoy to within 200 km of Moscow had been testament to the effectiveness of his fighters.

“We showed a master class, as it should have been on Feb. 24, 2022. We did not have the goal of overthrowing the existing regime and the legally elected government,” he said in an 11-minute audio message released on the Telegram messaging app.

Prigozhin renewed an allegation, so far unsupported by evidence, that the Russian military had attacked a Wagner camp with missiles and then helicopters, killing about 30 of its men, and said this had been the immediate trigger for what he called a “march of justice”.

Here’s what Jack Posobiec, the editor of Human Events had to say in a breaking post on X:

A private jet belonging to Yevgeny Prigozhin has crashed with all 7 passengers and 3 crew reportedly dying upon impact. Prigozhin was, per the passenger manifest, listed as being on the plane

There are also reports a second plane of its type belonging to Prigozhin has currently turned around and is landing in Moscow

Russian podcasters are also talking about this crash, but at the time they posted, they were not able to confirm if Prigozhin was alive or dead. If the reports are to be believed, Prigozhin is no longer.

Vladimir Putin did not miss a beat, delivering a speech earlier for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk.

We’ll keep an eye on developments surrounding this mysterious crash, and as more information comes out, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.
