Those following developments on Twitter likely have heard of or even been affected by Elon Musk’s new policy limiting Twitter usage:
To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits:
– Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day
– Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day
– New unverified accounts to 300/day— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 1, 2023
There have been many theories advanced as to the purpose for such limits, ranging from the cynical business incentive to encourage more paid subscribers, to the more conspiratorial possibility that Twitter wanted to limit the spread of video and information regarding the unrest in France.
The best and most interesting analysis of the policy change so far comes courtesy of former State Department official Mike Benz. Benz points out that whatever the intention of the policy, one significant effect will be to frustrate the efforts of various intelligence agencies and NGOs that collect mass amounts of data off of Twitter to train their censorship algorithms.
Have a listen:
Wow. Musk has no idea the DARPA rattlesnake he just stepped on by this doing this…
My take on @elonmusk’s new rate limit policy, from the lens of the censorship industry: https://t.co/AZ5SPIgHiz pic.twitter.com/Rw4KBZsT9O

Revolver News has of course been at the forefront of reporting the intelligence agencies’ use of Twitter for various psychological operations and censorship practices.
Musk seemed to acknowledge, at least in part, the validity of Benz’ analysis, in his succinct reply to another Twitter user’s comment on the video indicating that “scraping” of Twitter data is even more of an issue now with the rise of AI models that depend on large chunks of public data:

Let’s hope that Benz’ analysis is correct and whether inadvertently or not, his latest policy is giving the censorship and psy-op architects a little headache.
