A 2022 news story that initially went unnoticed has resurfaced and is now gaining widespread attention. It is sadly reflective of the issues we’re currently facing in the U.S. Back in 1996, many teachers, predominantly minorities, failed a standardized licensing test covering common academic subjects like reading, writing, math, and history. Interestingly, white teachers had notably better performances. Come 2022, the city decided to compensate these teachers who didn’t pass, reasoning that the test was racially biased and had detrimental impacts on their lives.

Just to clarify — they want us to believe that it wasn’t a matter of the teachers’ inability to meet standardized industry expectations that led to their failure — it was the “racist” test. Gotcha.

Daily Caller:

New York City is paying out $1.8 billion to thousands of black and Latino teachers who first sued in 1996 alleging the state-required Liberal Arts and Sciences Test was racially biased because white teachers were passing at a rate of 90%, while black teachers were passing at a 62% rate and Latino teachers at a 55% rate, The Wall Street Journal reported. Already, more than half of the 4,700 plaintiffs, who were demoted or fired for failing the test, have received a payout for a total of $835 million.

The test included over 80 multiple-choice questions and one essay question covering math, science, humanities, history and communication skills, the WSJ reported.

So, the logic appears to be that if white teachers performed better, the test must have been biased against minorities. What a cop out.

Actually, there’s another, more reasonable explanation for the discrepancy in test scores, but it seems this “alternative perspective” isn’t being soundly ignored.

However, Kate Walsh, former president of the National Council on Teacher Quality, told the Daily Caller News Foundation a difference in the passing rate between different racial groups is not evidence of a racially biased test.

“You can’t claim a test is discriminatory because a higher percentage of a certain class of people or a certain race or ethnicity do worse. That’s not sufficient,” Walsh told the DCNF. “It was a basic literacy test that assesses whether these teachers had sufficient reading, writing and math knowledge to be in the classroom.”

These compensations for test failures are quite substantial. There’s even a case of an individual failing the test a staggering 10 times, who is now on the verge of becoming a millionaire. The American dream is real, folks…

Among the teachers receiving a payout is Sylvia Alvarez, who will get a $1.1 million payout after failing the literacy test ten times and ultimately losing her job, the WSJ reported. Theodore Regis lost his teaching job after failing the literacy test five times and earning himself a payout of $1.2 million.

The only ones truly suffering are the children, who deserve quality education, not insider tips on how to be “queer.”

“This case is a precursor to what’s going on all over the country,” Walsh told the DCNF. “It is really bad for teacher quality, but most importantly, it’s bad for kids, because teachers who are under qualified are most likely to go back in the classroom, which are predominantly black and brown teachers who are most likely to teach black and brown kids. So you repeat this vicious cycle of educational inadequacy, because that’s the harder question to address. It’s much easier to say ‘oh let’s blame the test.’ For years we have been focusing on the fact that black and brown kids are getting a raw deal in our public schools.”

This is why our education is slipping. We’ve have teachers who spend their time teaching “social justice” because they aren’t up to snuff – even the bare minimum — on their subject matter. But who cares, they’re getting paid big bucks to be stupid.
