It is now illegal to download the app there. Any platform that allows access to TikTok or ability to download it will have to pay a fine of $10,000 per DAY.
I have many good NatSec friends who will disagree with me, but I see this as a dark day in history of the Internet.
The big winner here is Google/YouTube, who surely lobbied like hell to kill its competition.
What case will USG make to Europe about a “free & open Internet” now?
For years, US citizens heard dark stories of China’s “Great Firewall” & how deprived of freedom the Chinese are for being blocked from US sites.
Well guess what? Montana just made “freedom martyrs” out of every 16 y/o punished for trying to fit in w/ their friends in NYC & LA.
Today it’s Montana, but within a year it will likely be a 10-20 state coalition.
The diplomat in me is already dreading the Chinese MFA media crusade to Europe/Africa/LatAm on this —- the scam, they will say, of Western ideals of “freedom” from the country of Google/Facebook.
And what will be the answer to Chinese charges of Western “sham facade of freedom” as they pitch Huawei/TikTok stack to the world?
More sanctions?
Like it or not, every EU diplo I spoke w/ at State knew the Snowden reveals. None had illusions of US not having same backdoor.
There has got to be a better way than a ban. Especially at the state level, and especially red states.
If 10-20 red states follow Montana, this is going to make young people, influencers, and youth culture plunge into blue states even more.
It will be like Florida during Covid.

It’s hard to overstate how critical Turkey’s alliance (political capture) was to US interests during the Cold War.
Turkey is the gateway to the East. It’s the only entry point from Mediterranean to the Black Sea.
Vital transshipment for arms, drugs, & all trade in Eurasia.
Turkey played a crucial role in NATO’s Operation Gladio. It was the key country connecting US ops in Eurasia & SE Asia to NATO allies (both overworld & underworld) in Italy and France.
And Turkey’s gate over Black Sea makes it key to defense of Ukraine.
2. I note upfront a bit of personal pride: it was our foundation, @FFO_Freedom, that coined the phrase “censorship laundering” and has laid the groundwork for accountability that is happening today.
3. Chairman Dan Bishop is absolutely killing it with his introductory remarks. Pitch perfect. He just put a video clip first discovered and published by @FFO_Freedom on the Congressional Jumbotron for all Americans to see.
THREAD🧵: New docs obtained by @America1stLegal show DHS plan to produce videos training bystanders to take action against political speech by “Middle-Aged Pro Life Advocates” & “Old High School Friends” who are “Budding Conspiracy Theorists.”
2. Not content with only a Ministry of Truth, an Internet censorship bureau, and even a program for controlling speech in video games, DHS sought to pit citizens to monitor one another’s political beliefs under the guise of “deradicalization.”
3. DHS screenwrote a detailed profile for “Ann,” a “middle-aged pro-life advocate” — she is a “suburban Mom” surrounded by stock footage of “laundry” and “Minivan” who “has become increasingly more concerned about the welfare of other children:”
