The shell casing, fired from an AR-style rifle, fell outside of the front door of the lobby.

No one was injured at the station, though the bullet did break through our ballistic glass, strike our floor, ricochet into our front desk and then even into our ceiling.
Memphis Police identified the alleged shooter is 26-year-old Jarrad Nathan.

Jarrad Nathan
He was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Still unclear how and from where he obtained the semi-automatic rifle used.
FOX13 Investigates also learned that Nathan was licensed as an unarmed security guard from August of 2017 until August of 2019. He was also licensed as an armed security guard in the state of Tennessee from March of 2019 until March of 2021.
After allegedly firing the shot into the station, Nathan then ran to Ubee's and barricaded himself. He posted a Facebook Live video showing himself holed up in the restaurant.
Violent and tragic events can be difficult to process or cope with, and the stress of these events can impact your mental health.
While police secured the area, all FOX13 employees were evacuated for about 30 minutes.
The entire stretch of South Highland Street was shut down as ATF agents and local law enforcement swarmed the scene. Memphis Police also had a helicopter overhead surveying the scene.
As FOX13 learns more from the friends and family of Jarrad Nathan, the man charged with shooting into the FOX13 station, one thing is becoming abundantly clear, he is a young man who has faced mental health struggles for years.
About 30 minutes after FOX13 employees were evacuated, we all safely returned to the building.
Memphis Police said officers took Nathan into custody about two hours after the shot was fired into the FOX13 station.

After shooting into the station, a FOX13 employee, unaware of the shot that had just been fired, met Nathan outside, separated by a gate.
Nathan told the employee that he was frustrated that no one was listening to him. The FOX13 employee noticed Nathan had a gun and told him that he'd be happy to listen to him if he put the gun down.
After trying to hand the gun to the FOX13 employee, Nathan began to sit it on the ground. Nathan then got frightened as more employees came near, picked up his gun and ran off, barricading himself inside of Ubee's.

Our surveillance cameras showed Nathan pulling on our front door which requires a key card to access. Video then shows him lift up his AR-style rifle and fires a shot into the station.
Our ballistic glass is designed to stop small-caliber bullets and deter any large-caliber ammunition. The glass did it's job, deflecting the bullet downward.
The magnitude of what could have happened yesterday didn’t quite hit me until I saw our surveillance video. It’s chilling to watch. The bullistic glass held up, preventing it from shattering. A lot of us here still processing what happened. Glad no one was hurt @FOX13Memphis 💛 pic.twitter.com/jFPsZRj9SL

Nathan can then be seen yanking on and kicking at the front door. When he realized he could not gain entry, he turned around and left the building.
The University of Memphis, directly across the street from the FOX13 station, issued the following statement:
As of 12:30 PM on 05/02/23, the armed party is barricaded at 521 South Highland. There is a heavy police presence and Highland is shut down. All faculty, staff and students may resume normal campus activity, but are advised to remain clear of the ongoing police activity and avoid Highland. University officers are on patrol and in communication with the Memphis Police Department regarding the situation.
Nathan's parents called FOX13, saying that their son had been going through a mental episode. Another person, identifying themselves as a friend of the shooter, said that they had planned on meeting him later Tuesday to take him to a shelter.
