A Boston man who allegedly punched a bus driver for refusing to let him off at an undesignated stop,  triggered a devastating crash where the bus hit a vehicle and smashed into a utility pole, injuring 16 people on board.  

Matthew Young, 24, assaulted and punched the 48-year-old male bus driver when he didn't let him off at an unofficial stop, leading the driver to lose control of the vehicle around 7.15pm on Monday. 

He was riding the Brockton Area Transit Authority bus and requested to get off on Main Street in Randolph, then launched his attack when his request was refused. According to officials, that BAT bus route does not have a stop in Randolph. 

The driver then lost control of the bus causing it to hit a red Honda before coming to a crashing halt by slamming into a utility pole.

The red Honda suffered damage to its rear on the passengers side. The driver of the car was a 50-year-old Randolph women who was driving with a 61-year-old Randolph woman in the passenger seat. 

'He punched the bus driver in the face and the bus driver lost control, hit a car and then hit the pole,' a woman who witnessed the incident said to WCVB

'The bus driver stepped off the bus and you could see that he had been hit. His forehead was cracked open and his eyes were swollen.'  

Passengers said Young tackled the driver after punching him, according to the Patriot Ledger.

There were about 30 people on board the bus at the time of the crash.

The bus driver kept the doors on the bus closed until police arrived at the crash site in front of First Baptist Church on North Main Street. 

Young was arraigned on charges of assault and battery and wrongful interference in the operation of a vehicle carrying passengers for hire on Tuesday and was held without bail. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. 

He was emotional at his arraignment and shed a tear in court.  

Pictures from the scene show the crashed bus against the pole with damage sustained to its bicycle rack and front window.  

Cops say that Young admitted to punching the driver and had anxiety. He told officers that he was on his way to Randolph to visit a friend.  

According to his social media, Young was a front desk receptionist at Fitness Gym in Boston and shared Facebook statuses saying he was going to jail. 

'So I’m going to Jail I guess f**k it did it to myself,' he posted on Monday evening. 

He followed up with another post on Tuesday writing 'Free me'.

The incident remains under investigation by Randolph police.

'This attack on the driver made for a very dangerous situation for riders on the bus and anyone traveling in the immediate are,' Randolph Police Chief William Pace said on the incident. 

'Our firefighters and police responded to this incident swiftly, and as a result, we were able to transport the victims of this incident to area hospitals in a timely, effective manner,' Randolph Fire Chief Richard Donovan said in a statement.

The Honda was towed from the scene and police and firefighters were on site for about an hour following incident.
