There are a lot of people on the left and right who are going off-grid. But what exactly does that mean?
In its simplest form, off-grid living means not using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity. Many who think of “off-grid” living conjure visions of some toilet-free dilapidated cabin in the Colorado Rockies. That’s definitely a “style,” but off-grid living has evolved into much more than just a rickety cabin in the woods. Nowadays, there are van life adventurers, tiny house dwellers, RV lifers, and some people who are literally “camping” out in the woods as a lifestyle choice.
Some folks actively go off-grid to save money, decrease their “carbon footprint,” or because they can’t afford a traditional home. Times are tough… people are even converting utility sheds into houses.
Meanwhile, others go off-grid because they want to escape the tyrannical government, and some folks just want to “disappear” for personal reasons. Those who are seeking to disappear off the radar will have a much different experience than people who are saving money or making a “climate change” statement. It’s the difference between living in a cozy tiny house or a sparse tent.
The people who really want to fall off the radar will be relying on themselves and the land to survive. And if you’re one of those people or you’re exploring that lifestyle, or if you just want to disappear for the weekend, this article is for you.
There’s a very popular account on TikTok called “WoodsBoundOutdoors.” The man who runs the account is an accomplished outdoor survivalist, and he’s got so many tricks and tips for anybody who wants to try out a quiet, unassuming lifestyle in the great unknown.
