Brief note: The Grinch is trying to steal Revolver this Christmas. Fortunately, we are supported by many generous Subscribers and Donors, which helps us weather any cancel culture storm. You can now easily give the gift of a Revolver ad-free Subscription. Go to the Subscribe page and check the “gift” option. Don’t be a scrooge and make it an annual subscription. Buy one for yourself and for your friends and family, and anyone who can afford to give more, don’t hesitate to make a recurring monthly donation — whether it’s $1 or $1,000, every bit helps.

Today (December 22nd) is the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Ramanujan, which is still celebrated as “mathematics day.” Ramanujan’s genius was chronicled in the book “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” later turned into a film of the same name.

Ramanujan’s genius was entirely intuitive–a deeply devout Hindu, he said that the formulas he discovered were revealed to him in dreams by Namagiri Thayar, a family god. Even for those who do not practice the Hindu faith, Ramanujan’s inspired genius reminds us of the divine character of the structure of the universe, and how true and deep insight arrives mysteriously as a gift, more so than as truths we arrive at through a series of logical, deductive steps.

Ramanujan is known to have said “An equation has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God.”
