Mikhail Gorbachev, the first and only president of the Soviet Union, died at the age of 91 on August 30, 2022. His supporters credit him with having played a key part in bringing an end to the Cold War, while opponents accused him of aiding the fall of the Soviet Union.
From his time in office right until his death, Mikhail Gorbachev remained one of Russia’s most prominent politicians. He rose through the ranks of the Soviet Communist Party to become the only elected president of the Soviet Union. He was best known for his ideas of “perestroika” (translated from the Russian as reconstruction) and “glasnost” (openness), for putting an end to the Cold War, for pulling Soviet troops out from Afghanistan and for leading the USSR at the time when the complex political-economic crisis of the union brought about its collapse.
