Matt Gaetz and other populist allies of President Trump’s agenda won big in Florida’s primary election Tuesday night.
Congressman Gaetz was easily renominated for a third term representing the first district of Florida in Congress, despite a vow early this year to not take any donations from PACs. Gaetz, who has garnered praise and attention as one of the most anti-interventionist, anti-War Republicans in the House, beat two challenger with over 80 percent of the vote. One of those challengers, Greg Merk, attacked Gaetz for backing a House war powers resolution restricting the president’s ability to start a war with Iran.
Two Gaetz allies also beat establishment GOP politicians elsewhere in the state. In Florida’s 13th District, rising star Anna Paulina Luna defeated four other rivals to win the nomination to challenge ex-Republican Charlie Crist. Luna’s establishment-backed rival, Amanda Makki, is a quintessential D.C. insider, who spent seven years as a staffer for anti-Trump Republican Lisa Murkowski, and then five more years working as a lobbyist before making her run for Congress.
Meanwhile, in the 15th district, newcomer Scott Franklin narrowly upset incumbent Ross Spano by just 1,500 votes.
Spano was backed by House Republican leadership, including Kevin McCarthy, despite an ongoing Justice Department investigation for campaign finance violations. Gaetz endorsed Franklin, arguing that running Spano again would needlessly hand the seat to Democrats.
It is “SpaNO" not "SpaNOS," Mr. Leader.
While you can't say it right in your endorsement…
