In the Ukrainian election of 2019, the current Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky successfully unseated the previous incumbent, prominent oligarch Petro Poroshenko.
Once celebrated in the Western press as an opponent of corruption, recent polls have shown a shocking decline in confidence among Ukranians in both Zelensky and their government institutions generally.
A poll conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology indicates: “only one in ten residents of the country strongly approve of the president’s performance, and another 28% somewhat approve of it. That said, the Ukrainian president’s approval rating stands at 38% compared to 64% in October 2019 and 52% in March 2020.” However, 45% of those surveyed disapprove of how Zelensky is handling his job, up from 22% in the fall of 2019 and 27% in March 2020.
As many as 23% of respondents approve of the Ukrainian government’s performance and 59% disapprove of it, the pollster said. The government’s approval rating was 51% in October 2019 and 25% in March 2020. [TASS]
A comedian with no prior political experience, Ukranian President Zelensky is best known to American readers for his series of phone calls with President Trump, which became the basis for the failed attempt to impeach and remove President Trump orchestrated by globalists embedded in the American government.
These anti-Trump elements and their enablers in the media alleged that President Trump engaged in an impeachable and improper “quid pro quo” arrangement for withholding military aid to Ukraine unless Zelensky took proactive measures to investigate corruption in Ukraine related to dealings with Joe Biden.
The contents of the call were underwhelming and insufficient basis to remove Trump from office. The transcipts of that phone call can be found here.
The above recent poll out of the Ukraine seems at least partially to vindicate Trump’s instincts that Zelensky, who ran an anti-corruption campaign, had not yet done enough to clamp down on Ukraine corruption to justify additional military aid.
